Is Memorial Day the start of summer?

Memorial day has traditionally signaled the start of summer. Major movie blockbusters are released and the weather starts to turn warm, resulting in cookouts and trips to the beach.

The official beginning of summer however is June 21, the summer solstice. The summer solstice is the day with the most hours of sunlight during the whole year. The timing of the solstice depends on when the sun reaches its northernmost point from the equator.
